Merci à Karine de nous avoir rappelé que le 24 juillet 1967, le générale De Gaulle, en visite au Canada français, donna l’un de ses plus remarquables discours qui finit par un mémorable “Vivre le Québec libre !“.
Le court discours du général (moins de 7 min) était emprunt à la fois d’émotion, tout en gardant un certain fond paternaliste, limite colonialiste. Nous ne pouvons évidemment pas remettre en cause la sincérité du glorieux orateur, qui comme il l’indique revivait l’atmosphère (vous avez dit atmosphère!) de la libération de la France en 1944.
Si une personne pouvait encore en douter, l’intervention de Charles De Gaulle prouve sans nul doute l’immense affection que l’hexagone porte à ses cousins d’outre-Atlantique.
Ce grand rendez-vous de l’histoire n’était pas fortuit. De Gaulle l’avait préparé minutieusement. En accostant à Québec avec un bateau militaire français, et en parcourant le Chemin du Roy, De Gaule marcha dans les pas de ses ancêtres et reprit l’histoire là où la France l’avait abandonné 200 ans auparavant.
À la manière d’Édith Piaf, la voix du président de la République française chantait les “r”, et ce tout particulièrement sur le mot “libre”. Les 15.000 personnes présentes devant l’Hôtel de Ville de Montréal acclamaient chacune des paroles du représentant français.
Le destin voulut que ce moment arriva et fut capté par les caméras de Radio Canada. Autant la chaîne de télévision publique n’est pas familière avec le soccer, autant la retransmission du discours du général de Gaulle est exemplaire.
La liste des commentaires faits sur Internet montre que le sujet est encore délicat et qu’il est loin de faire l’unanimité au Québec. Mais, pour beaucoup, le 24 juillet 1967 venait consacrer les changements vécus dans la société québécoise à la suite de la Révolution tranquille.
