Demain, Google devrait annoncer le rachat d’Île sans fil, le premier fournisseur au monde de connexions gratuites à l’Internet sans fil.
Après plusieurs mois de négociation, Google vient de signer une entente avec l’organisation montréalaise Île sans fil, pour le rachat intégral de son parc de point d’accès à l’Internet sans fil. Le service prendra la dénomination de Google WiFI Montréal.
Google n’est pas un joueur nouveau sur le terrain de l’accès à l’Internet sans fil. Depuis plusieurs mois, les 73.000 habitants de Moutain View utilisent avec succès des services de Google Wifi. Avec cette entente unique en son genre, Google prend un coup d’avance et inaugure une longue série de partenariats à venir.
Le bureau de Google Montréal, ouvert en janvier 2007, devrait être en charge du développement du nouveau service. La transition se fera sur les 8 prochains mois. Le service continuera à être gratuit, avec toujours une assurance de qualité de services pour les usagers d’Île sans fil.
D’après les responsables de l’organisme, avec plus de 30.000 utilisateurs, le développement d’Île sans fil étai devenu trop important pour une simple organisation à but non lucratif. Pour soutenir les bénévoles, qui travaillaient quotidiennement à la mise en place et au suivi des installations, il devenait urgent d’avoir le soutien d’une entité comme Google.
Google soutient déjà des projets innovants dans le domaine de la protection de l’environnement, avec la plus grosse installation d’énergie solaire au monde et la distribution de vélos au googler européens.
Après Moutain View et Montréal, Google souhaite montrer l’exemple et démontrer qu’il existe une alternative aux offres d’accès payant à l’Internet sans fil.

Île sans fil ne sera évidemment pas rachetée par Google. Cet article avait juste pour but de souligner un superbe projet communautaire soutenu depuis plus de 3 ans par une poignée de bénévoles. Longue vie à ISF.
