En 1979, Denyse McCann, André Ménard et le réalisateur/chanteur/compositeur québécois Alain Simard ont pris le pari de croire que Montréal deviendrait un jour la ville référence en matière de musique jazz. Un an après leur rêve devient réalité avec le lancement du premier festival international de jazz de Montréal.
Chaque année, Montréal reçoit ainsi l’un des plus importants événements de jazz, aux côtés du Festival de jazz de Montreux et du Newport jazz Festival.
Pour 11 jours, Montréal vit au rythme des guitares, pianos, contrebasses, saxophone et autres instruments à vent. La manifestation montréalaise attire les amateurs d’acid jazz, de free jazz, funky, fusion, de jazz… cool, traditionnel, hot,rock, classique, ou encore de scat et de swing.
Depuis 2000, le rendez-vous jazzesque de Montréal se décline autour d’une semaine de Off. L’OFF Festival de jazz de Montréal est un organisme à but non lucratif voué au soutien, au développement et au rayonnement des musiciens oeuvrant dans le milieu du jazz et de la musique improvisée.
Montréal a fait des petits émules sur la province avec le JazzFest des jeunes du Québec. Ce regroupement de scolaires et de communautaires se rejoint chaque printemps à l’école André-Laurendeau St-Hubert.
La 28e édition du Festival international de jazz de Montréal a débuté avec l’attribution du prix Miles Davis au guitariste Mike Stern, qui avait justement commencé sa carrière en jouant avec le célèbre jazzman.

L’année prochaine se tiendront à Pékin les Jeux Olympiques 2008.
