La grenouille givrée a écrit récemment un article très complet sur les symboles de Montréal. Un peu vengeur, le drapeau du Canada vient prendre le dessus aujourd’hui.
Oh surprise, l’étendard canadien n’est pas si ancien. La version actuelle de la feuille d’érable a pris ses racines à l’automne 1965. Jusqu’à cette date, le Canada arboré les couleurs du Red Ensign canadien, basé sur l’Union Jack de son altesse royale.
L’unifolié, littéralement le drapeau à la feuille d’érable, comporte un meuble héraldique blanc en son centre. Il prend exactement la moitié du drapeau. Il est entouré de deux bandes rouges, couleur de l’Angleterre. Le blanc fait lui référence à la bannière royale française.
Le Maple Leaf Flag reçut la Sanction royale de la Reine Élisabeth II le 15 février 1965, qui est devenu le Jour du drapeau national du Canada.
Le 15 février est “étrangement” la date retenue par Pierre Falardeau pour nommer son film à la mémoire de patriotes québécois pendus en 1839. La grenouille givrée devrait apprécier ce long métrage.
Tu as omis de signaler que les deux bandes rouges symbolisent les océans Atlantique et Pacifique [autrefois] dominés par la Marine Britannique, tandis que l’aplat blanc du milieu représente le territoire canadien enneigé coast to coast (et accessoirement, les Français coincés entre les deux:) C’est là mon interprétation de la véritable histoire de ce drapeau qui a failli être trifolié et bordé de bandes bleues. Il faut un nouveau drapeau, une feuille d’érable c’est pas très viril, ça fait pas peur à personne, personne respecte un drapeau qu’une chenille avec un peu de volonté peut détruire !

@Francis: c’est vrai qu’une feuille d’érable, ce n’est pas très viril, mais (1) la feuille de vigne était déjà prise par le Vatican et (2) ça ne tient guère plus chaud l’hiver. Quand à se ce qu’elle se fasse bouffer par une chenille, je te rappelle que c’est ce qui est arrivé à la fleur de lys française, aujourd’hui disparue du tricolore. Le Canada est un pays plus jeune et plus dur de la feuille, c’est tout.

Oui pour ce qui est du castor enragé…je crois que ça aurait plus l’air du drapeau d’une équipe de hockey!!!
Le 15 février est la date de la pendaison de Chevalier de Lorimier et de onze autres Patriotes, à la prison Au pied du courant, à Montréal. Vous pouvez admirer le petit monument en-dessous du pont Jacques-Cartier, sur la rue Notre-Dame, juste à côté des bureaux de la SAQ. Une cérémonie est organisée à chaque année, le lundi précédant ou suivant la date du 24 mai (Journée nationale des Patriotes). Notons qu’ailleurs au Canada, il s’agit de la fêtre de la Reine (Victoria Day)… la reine Victoria, celle qui fit justement réprimer la révolte des Patriotes! Ironique, n’est-ce pas…
